Positive Results Validate Company's Home Security Technology
AUSTIN, Texas (June 4, 2001) -- Security Broadband Corp. announced today the successful completion of the Alpha trial of
its premium home security and communications systems. Security Broadband offers an
innovative approach to home security by creating a product that will feature
two-way audio and real-time video access over a broadband connection. The three
primary objectives of the Alpha trial were to test the validity and reliability
of the system as well as to test the upstream demands placed on the cable
infrastructure, and to measure users' experience with this new technology.
Security Broadband partnered with Cox Communications in
Las Vegas and began the Alpha trial of its home security product in the fourth
quarter of 2000. During the trial, the Security Broadband product, which included a
control panel, video transmission unit, multiple cameras, and wireless door and
window sensors, was installed in approximately 100 trial participants' homes.
Participants activated and deactivated the system during normal daily
activities. They also performed periodic alarm events - similar to a fire drill
- to test the video connection and streaming capabilities of the system.
Security Broadband reports that scheduled alarm events had a 100 percent reliability rate
for the transmission of video information across the network to Security Broadband's
monitoring station. In addition, the system's upstream utilization was monitored
carefully and the data confirms that the system did not adversely affect
available bandwidth.
"As a company, we are dedicated to giving
homeowners peace of mind and the convenience of communicating with their
families whether they are at home or away. The results of this Alpha trial
further validate this approach and reinforce our belief that there is a
compelling need in the marketplace for a more effective security and
communications system," said Security Broadband Corp. President and CEO
William Glasgow. "We will now build on the results from the Alpha trial
with a controlled launch in up to three markets starting in Q4 of 2001."
After the trial was completed, Security Broadband surveyed
participants to gain additional insight into their experiences with the product.
Participant feedback was positive. The vast majority responded they would likely
purchase the system when it became available. A similar number indicated they
would be very likely to recommend the Security Broadband system to others.
"I think this is exactly the kind of product
that many home owners have been looking for. The system's monitoring features
offer better protection and give me a higher level of comfort. What's really
exciting is that it will offer the convenience of being able to see and talk to
your loved ones when you're at work or on the road," said Phil Peckman,
Alpha trial participant.
Among the features that users rated high in
satisfaction were their ability to view the home when they were away, the
heightened sense of security, and the convenience of remote Internet access.
This system includes multiple layers of protection designed to prevent
unauthorized access to the system. Additionally, the technology's design ensures
that Security Broadband's monitoring station has access to customers' homes only during
an alarm event.
"Cox Communications' decision to participate
in this Alpha trial was two-fold. First, we wanted to test the technology's
capabilities and the integrity of the system. We also needed to understand the
trial participants' feedback about a product that we could potentially use to
expand our host of services," said Jill Campbell, Cox's VP of Operations
for all Mid-America systems. "We were pleased with the results and we
eagerly await the next evolution of the Security Broadband product."
Security Broadband Broadband hopes to capitalize on the
residential security market, which totaled approximately $5.6 billion, or 35
percent, of the total security market in 1999. Additionally, according to Parks
Associates, the electronic security market is expected to grow to $29 billion by
2007 - nearly doubling its worth of $16 billion in 1999.
